San Francisco Trip

I finally went on a mini vacation...yay.... My husband stayed home and watched our girls. He enjoyed spending some quality time with them.

My sister and I decided to make a last minute trip to San Francisco. Jenny was supposed to join us, but she had to work =(. Maybe next time again.

Anyways, we went to Sacramento first to stay with our cousins who live there. We flew Monday at noon. They took us to down town and we had a late lunch at a nice bar and grill. I can't remember the name of it right now, but it was delicious. We spent time with our cousins at home and caught up with what's going on with them. It's been ten years since my sister and I have gone to visit them. They have changed alot and so has Sacramento.

On Tuesday we dropped my two younger cousins to school and drove to San Francisco. It was about a two hour drive and we made it in about an hour and a half I think. Carpool really helps.

We parked at pier 39 and walked around. We visited the farmers market and bought alot of goodies. The pastries were yummy....I could not resist. Yum...just thinking about it now makes my mouth water. They had alot of fresh and delectable treats, and everyone knows how much I enjoy my food and desserts. Yummy...yummy....=)

From there we walked to Fishermans warf. It was a pretty good walk. The weather was really nice, although you needed a light jacket. The sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky. Beautiful day for exploring.

We decided to eat an early lunch before we went on our tour to Alcatraz. My sister recommended the Pier Market. Again...yummy!

Since there was three of us we decided to all pick entrees and split. We ordered there famous Clam Chower, Ceasar Salad and fried Calamari. Oh my goodness it was all yummy...We sat outside and under the shade while we ate and people watched. For a tuesday they had a good amount of tourists.

After we ate we started walking our way down to the ferry. We stopped to see the seals. They were all so big, loud and smelly...whew...really smelly, but they were cute I guess?? Just the babies.

We got on our ferry and sailed to the Island of Alcatraz. It was really nice. We sat on the top deck and sat outside. You could see the Golden gate bridge, Coit tower, World trans American building, the Bay bridge, Fishermans warf and Ghirardelli square. The city was beautiful.

When we got to alcatraz we could just walk everywhere and explore everything. No tour guide was there to guide us. There was alot of people just coming and going.

You would think that it would give you and eerie feeling, but it didn't. It was really nice and a learning experience. No bad vibes or really creepy feelings. Nothing like that, but alot of walking up steep hills. The views of the city was awsome.

We went to the Jail cells and had an audio tour of the history there. We saw Al Capones (Scarface) cell number 181, Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz), George (Machine Gun) Kelly were only a few of the notorious. It was very facinating to learn there life style there on the island.

It was kind of creepy to see the isolation rooms and the galley. I think those places gave me somewhat of a weird vibe.

After walking through the jail cells, we went out into the courtyard. They had a beautiful view of the city of San Francisco.

We stayed on the island for about 3 hours. You could come and go whenever the ferry would come...i think they would dock every 20 minutes, but we wanted to explore everything that we could. I still don't think we saw everything, we still wanted to go out and see the city before dark, besides we parked so far and had to walk all the way back.

When we came back to Fishermans warf we decided to have dinner before heading home. We walked around and stopped in front of Cioppino's restaurant. It was family owned and the menu looked appetizing. It's kind of medium to high priced, but pretty much all the places that we looked at were about the same. You figure that you are paying for seafood.

Cioppino is a lusty and flavorful seafood soup which is uniquely San Franciscan. The origin of both the dish and the name came from the Italian fishermen in the early 1900's, when Fisherman's Warf was still called Meigg's Warf. Someone would make the rounds of the moored fishing boats, calling out for contributions to a common, festive stew. One fisherman would toss a nice, fat fish into the bucket, another would drop in a succulent Dungeness crab, another some herbs and veggies. The cry that prompted each contribution was: Chip in!, Chip in!. But coming from an Italian throat, this American slang had to end in a vowel. An the "in" was, of course "een". So "Chip-een-o" was born.

Their Cioppino stew is so good they decided to name there restaurant that.

We ate soooo good there. I couldn't believe how much seafood we ate there. So yummy...We ate shrimp, clams, calamari, dungeness crabs in pasta, and Blackened Pacific Snapper. Y-U-M-M-Y!!!

So if you are ever in San Francisco...go and eat there, especially if you enjoy seafood.

After we ate we started walking our way back to the car and stopped at a few shops and little side vendors just browsing at what was there.

Oops, almost forgot that we stopped at Ghirardelli Square to buy some of there famous chocolates.

They had an oyster eating contest, most of the people there who were eating were all in their suits. They had a live band playing aswell. The atmosphere was enjoyable. Again, alot of people watching. Before we left we went to Pier Market again to pick up some clam chower and calamari for our Aunt and Uncle. We knew they would enjoy that.

We finally made it to our car and drove back to Sacramento. The traffic was okay. Busy...busy...even carpool was busy. I think it was about 7pm that we left and made it back by 9pm. We were all so tired of all the walking we did.

We slept good that night.

Wednesday was when we flew home, but before we did our Aunt and Uncle wanted to treat us out to lunch before our flight. We met them in downtown Sacramento.

We ate a Sushi bar call Taiko. The service there was great. It was a cozy little place which seemed very popular with the government employees. It was pretty busy there and crowded. The sushi was awesome. If you love sushi, I would recommend going there. They had raw, baked or fried sushi. Yum!!!

I gotta go drop grace off at the airport, but i'll be back to finish my blog....

Cio for now...glasel=)
